Popular in ferneries as an under story plant, the Fishbone Water Fern likes a damp shady spot with free draining soil high in organic matter. Growing out of its rhizome and reaching a maximum trunk height of 1 metre (usually closer to 30cm in cultivation), this plant often colonises areas of disturbed soil, again making it ideal for the urban fernery.
The only maintenance this plant requires is regular water (like all ferns) and removal of dead growth. With an increase in water supply, the fishbone water fern can take more light but will yellow off if regularly exposed to intense sunlight.
