The Bacon Avocado is the only choice when it comes to cold climates. While this avocado is cold hardy (to -5deg), it like all avocados is best suited to a large pot slightly raised off the ground. With the avocado adequate drainage is vital for survival; short periods of over-watering can easily kill this plant. Producing its pear shaped fruit in mid to late summer, this upright vigorous grower is (like all avocados) frost tender in the early stages of flowering and when young. Moving the pot from part shade to full sun over a 3 year period will give good results, though care should be taken to protect it from Melbourne's hot and dry summer winds.
Avocados are divided into A & B cultivars. 'Hass' is an 'A' cultivar and 'Bacon' and 'Fuerte' are 'B' cultivars, all three of these are available at A.J. Flynn. Although the Avocado is self pollinating, a higher yield is more likely with the appropriate selection of a companion variety.
